Choosing a designer radiator: a buyer’s guide
A designer radiator has to do two jobs: heat the room properly and look right on the wall. Getting the heat output right first means you can then choose freely on style.
Work out the heat output you need
Heat output is shown in watts or BTUs. The output you need depends on the size of the room, ceiling height, the number and type of windows and how well the room is insulated. A heating engineer can calculate this for each room. Remember that manufacturers usually quote output at a set water temperature, so check the figure your system will actually deliver, especially with a heat pump, which runs at lower flow temperatures.
Vertical or horizontal?
Vertical radiators are useful where wall space is narrow, such as beside a door or in an alcove, and they make a bold feature in rooms with high ceilings. Horizontal designs sit well under windows, where they help counter cold air from the glass.
Materials and finishes
Steel is the most common material and comes in a wide choice of colours. Aluminium heats up and cools down quickly, while stainless steel suits bathrooms and kitchens where moisture is a concern. Matt, textured and metallic finishes can be matched to taps, handles and light fittings.
Bathrooms and kitchens
In bathrooms, a heated towel rail or a dual fuel radiator, which can run on the central heating or on electricity alone, keeps towels warm outside the heating season. Any electrical element in a bathroom must be installed to suit the zone it is in. You can plan a radiator alongside the rest of your room with our bathrooms team.
Valves and fitting
Thermostatic radiator valves let you control each room. Check whether your radiator needs side, bottom or central connections, and plan the pipework before the walls are finished.

Designer radiator questions
How do I know what size radiator I need?
The heat output you need depends on the room size, ceiling height, windows and insulation. Ask a heating engineer to calculate it, and check the output at the water temperature your system runs at.
Are vertical radiators as effective as horizontal ones?
A vertical radiator with the right heat output will warm a room just as well. Choose the shape to suit the wall space, and size it by output rather than appearance.
