Freestanding & Suspended Bio-Ethanol Fires
A real flame with no building work. Freestanding and suspended bio-ethanol fires stand on the floor or hang from the ceiling, need no chimney or flue, and can go wherever the room allows.
Floor-standing or ceiling-hung? Floor-standing fires, such as the Planika Cottage and Retro, the Le Feu Dome and the Decoflame Espoo on legs or a steel foot, need only a level, stable floor. A ceiling-hung fire such as the Espoo Ceiling-Hung makes a striking centrepiece over a seating area, but the ceiling must be able to carry its weight.
Automatic or manual? Planika models are automatic, with push-button ignition, adjustable flame height and built-in safety sensors. Other models are lit by hand, so check the details on each product page.
Where to place it. Keep the fire well away from curtains, shelves and anything flammable, keep the clearances in the manual, and keep children and pets at a safe distance.

Room size and ventilation. Every bio-ethanol fire has a manufacturer's minimum room size, shown on each product page where the manufacturer publishes one (otherwise marked TBC). Use the fire only in a room at least that large, and keep it ventilated while the fire burns (an open trickle vent or slightly open window). Never refill a burner while it is alight or still warm, use only bio-ethanol fuel made for fireplaces, and keep the clearances in the installation manual.
Frequently asked questions
Do freestanding bio-ethanol fires need a flue?
No. They need no chimney or flue, but the room must be ventilated and meet the fire's minimum room size.
Can I hang a bio-ethanol fire from any ceiling?
Only from a ceiling that can safely carry the fire's weight. Check the manufacturer's fixing details, and use a qualified installer if you are unsure.
Can I move a freestanding fire?
Yes, once the flame is out and the fire has cooled completely. Never move a fire while it is lit or still warm.
