RK Steel Doors Guide: Styles, Prices and FAQs

RK Door Systems steel and glass doors are handmade in the UK from galvanised steel, built to the exact size of your opening and finished in the colour you choose. Their slim frames let light move between rooms while still giving each space its own definition. At BMF Store we supply RK doors, screens and partitions across the UK, and you can see display doors in person at our Leeds showroom on Meanwood Road. This guide explains the door styles, fire-rated options, finishes and glass, what affects the price, and how to measure, so you can arrive at a quote knowing what you want.

Choose your door style

Hinged steel and glass doors

The classic choice for a doorway between rooms. A hinged leaf, single or double, swings on concealed or feature hinges and can be paired with fixed side screens to fill a wider opening. View hinged steel and glass doors.

Pivot doors

A pivot door turns on a point set in from the edge rather than on hinges, which suits wide, tall leaves and gives a striking, balanced swing. A favourite for entrances to open-plan living spaces. View pivot doors.

Sliding doors

Sliding panels run on a track across the face of the wall, so no floor space is lost to a door swing. Ideal where furniture sits close to the opening. View sliding doors.

Pocket doors

The leaf slides into a cavity inside the wall and disappears when open. This needs planning at the build stage, but gives the cleanest result of all. View pocket doors.

Bi-folding doors

Panels fold back on themselves to open most of the width, which suits wide openings between a kitchen and a dining or garden room. View bi-folding doors.

Fixed glass partitions

Fixed screens divide a space while letting light through: a glazed home office, a kitchen screen or a hallway wall. They can be combined with any of the door types above. View fixed glass partitions.

External steel windows and doors

For outside walls, the external range brings the same slim steel look to windows and doors built to cope with the weather. View external steel windows and doors.

FD30 fire-rated steel doors

Where a door has to hold back fire, for example onto a stairwell in a three-storey house or in a flat, RK offers FD30 versions in two profiles: Classic FD30 and Ultra Slim FD30. FD30 means the certified door set gives 30 minutes of fire integrity when it is installed as tested. Building Regulations requirements vary from project to project, so check with your building control officer before you order and we will match the specification to what they ask for.

RK02 to RK06: choosing a bar layout

Each RK range uses a different arrangement of glazing bars, from the cleaner, more open layouts to the busier grids associated with traditional industrial steel windows. The right one depends on the height of the door, the style of the house and how much you want the frame to show. Every range is offered in the same door styles.

Finishes and glass

Frames are powder coated, with standard RAL colours as well as any RAL shade, Farrow & Ball and Little Greene colour matches, and Liquid Metal finishes for a real metal surface. Black remains the most popular, but soft greys, deep greens and bronze tones work beautifully in period homes. For the glass, choose clear for maximum light, Satinato or patterned obscure for privacy in bathrooms and offices, fluted for texture, or tinted for a moodier look. RK backs the powder coating and glass with a 10-year warranty.

How much do RK steel doors cost?

Every RK door is made to measure, so there is no fixed price list; the figures below are a guide to help you budget, not a quote.

  • Starting point: from around £2,000 for a smaller, simple door.
  • Typical project: most jobs we quote come in between £5,000 and £8,000, usually for openings of roughly 1500mm to 2m wide and up to about 2.4m tall.
  • Larger or complex work: £15,000 or more for wide multi-panel screens, extra-tall doors or special specifications.

What moves the price:

  • the overall size and number of opening leaves
  • side panels and top lights (fanlights)
  • the door style, as pocket, sliding and pivot hardware costs more than a simple hinge
  • special finishes such as Liquid Metal or colour-matched paints
  • galvanising and external-grade specifications
  • the glass type and any FD30 fire rating
  • survey, delivery and installation requirements

Send us your opening sizes and we will give you a firm, itemised quote. You can also try the door configurator to explore options first.

Lead times, survey and installation

Because every door is made to measure, nothing goes into production until you order. Typical lead times are 8–12 weeks, and we will give you a confirmed delivery date once the factory has approved your order, usually within two weeks of ordering. For local projects we can arrange a survey to check the opening before production, and we supply customers and trade buyers across the UK.

How to measure for an RK door

Measure the structural opening (the brick or stud opening with any lining or architrave removed), not an existing door leaf. Take the width at the top, middle and bottom, and the height at the left, middle and right, and give us the smallest figures. Note whether the floor finish is already in, and tell us about anything nearby such as switches, radiators or a staircase. If you are unsure, ask us about a survey before ordering.
