How the measuring process works

Because every RK door is made to measure, accurate sizes are the foundation of the whole order. The process usually runs like this:

  1. Initial sizes: you measure the structural opening (the brick or stud opening without linings or architraves), not the existing door. These figures allow us to prepare a quotation.
  2. Design choices: you settle the door style, bar layout, finish and glass, using the showroom displays and samples to help.
  3. Final sizes: before anything is ordered, the final dimensions are checked and confirmed. If building work is still under way, wait until the opening is finished, as plastering, new linings or a new floor finish can all change the size.
  4. Order and factory approval: once you have approved the order, it goes to RK for manufacture.

Measuring tips for Yorkshire homes

  • Period properties: older openings are rarely perfectly square. Measure the width at the top, middle and bottom, and the height at both sides and in the middle, then give us the smallest figures.
  • Knock-throughs and extensions: if you are creating a new opening, the structural opening can often be sized around the door you want. Talk to us before the steel or lintel goes in.
  • Floors: tell us whether the final floor finish is already down, as this affects the height.
  • Surroundings: note switches, radiators, stairs or wall returns close to the opening.
